Description
The US Navy F9F-2 Panther was one of America’s first successful carrier-based jet fighters and a key aircraft of the early Cold War. Developed by Grumman, it first flew in 1947 and entered service in 1949. Powered by a Pratt & Whitney J42 turbojet, the Panther featured straight wings, a sturdy tricycle landing gear, and folding wings for carrier operations. Armed with four 20 mm cannon and capable of carrying bombs or rockets, it served primarily as a fighter-bomber. The F9F-2 saw extensive combat during the Korean War, flying ground-attack and escort missions. Reliable and easy to handle, it helped transition the US Navy fully into the jet age.
