Description
The US Navy F3F-2, flown by VF-6 “Fighting Six,” was a biplane fighter developed in the mid-1930s as the last biplane in frontline USN service. Powered by a 950 hp radial engine, it reached speeds of 295 mph (475 km/h) and had an operational range of 460 miles (740 km). The F3F-2 featured an all-metal fuselage with fabric-covered wings, fixed landing gear, and an open cockpit. Armed with two 0.50 in (12.7 mm) M2 Browning machine guns, it was highly maneuverable and praised for agility, making it effective in carrier operations from USS Enterprise and USS Saratoga. VF-6 pilots trained extensively with the aircraft, which played a crucial role in refining US Navy tactics before the transition to monoplane fighters like the F4F Wildcat. Its service ended by 1941, marking the close of the biplane fighter era in the Navy.
