Description

After WWII, much of Eastern Europe fell under Soviet control, restricting movement and communication. The USSR’s expansionism extended toward both the Americas and the Far East, prompting Winston Churchill in 1946 to call the divide the “Iron Curtain.” In 1949, the Soviets tested their first nuclear weapon, ending the U.S. monopoly and making intelligence gathering vital. Aerial reconnaissance began even in peacetime. The USAF’s RB-57 entered service in 1956, cruising above MiG-17s, but Soviet radar soon proved capable of detection. Lockheed independently developed the CL-282, combining an F-104 fuselage with long, light wings for 70,000 ft flight. The CIA supported the unarmed design to reduce provocation. Construction began in November 1954.
