Description
After WWII, much of Eastern Europe fell under Soviet control, restricting movement and communications. The USSR’s expansionism extended toward Latin America and the Far East, prompting Winston Churchill in 1946 to describe the divide as the “Iron Curtain.” In 1949, the Soviets tested their first nuclear weapon, ending the U.S. monopoly. Intelligence, especially aerial reconnaissance, became critical. The USAF developed the RB-57 in 1956, capable of altitudes beyond MiG-17s, but Soviet radar advancements soon challenged this. Lockheed independently designed the CL-282X, combining an F-104 fuselage with high-aspect-ratio wings, lightened for 70,000 ft flight. The CIA supported it as an unarmed reconnaissance aircraft to avoid provoking nuclear conflict. Construction began in 1954.
