Description
The Tornado F.3 ADV (Air Defence Variant) was a British interceptor developed from the Panavia Tornado, designed primarily for long-range air defense during the Cold War. Introduced in the mid-1980s, it was equipped with a stretched fuselage to accommodate more fuel and advanced avionics, including the Foxhunter radar, enabling beyond-visual-range engagement with Skyflash missiles. Powered by two RB199-34R Mk 104 engines, the F.3 could achieve supersonic speeds and had an extended loiter time, ideal for patrolling UK airspace.
The aircraft carried four AIM-120 AMRAAM or Skyflash missiles and four AIM-9 Sidewinders. It served mainly with the Royal Air Force until its retirement in 2011, participating in various NATO missions and air policing duties. Though it never saw air-to-air combat, the F.3 played a key role in maintaining air sovereignty, particularly over the UK and Falkland Islands, and was valued for its endurance, radar capability, and weapons systems integration.
