Description
The Hawker Tempest was a pinnacle of piston-engine fighter design in WWII, developed to fix flaws in the earlier Typhoon. The Typhoon's thick wing caused drag at high speeds, so the Tempest featured a much thinner, near-elliptical wing for better performance. Originally planned as the Typhoon Mk II, it was renamed Tempest due to extensive changes. A 76-gallon fuselage fuel tank was added by moving the engine forward 21 inches, requiring a larger tail for stability. The landing gear was also redesigned with a Dowty levered-leg system. With powerful radial engines, the Tempest became one of the fastest and most capable fighters of the war.
