Description
The General Motors TBM-3 Avenger was the most mass-produced variant of the iconic American World War II carrier-based torpedo bomber (originally designed by Grumman as the TBF). Because Grumman's factories were prioritized for building F6F Hellcat fighters, production of the Avenger was shifted to General Motors' Eastern Aircraft Division, where they built thousands under the "TBM" designation.
The TBM-3 featured a more powerful Wright R-2600-20 radial engine (delivering 1,900 hp), strengthened wings capable of carrying rockets or drop tanks, and an internal bomb bay spacious enough for a torpedo or up to 2,000 lbs of bombs.
