Description
The Grumman TBM-3 Avenger was the final and most advanced wartime version of the famous Avenger torpedo bomber, serving with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps during World War II. Introduced in 1944, the TBM-3 was powered by the Wright R-2600 Cyclone engine, providing improved reliability and performance. It featured strengthened structure, updated electrical systems, and provisions for wing-mounted rockets in addition to carrying torpedoes or bombs in its internal bay. A crew of three operated the aircraft, which was armed with forward-firing and defensive machine guns, including a powered dorsal turret. Rugged and versatile, the TBM-3 excelled in anti-ship, anti-submarine, and ground attack roles. After the war it continued in service worldwide, proving the Avenger’s durability and adaptability well beyond WWII.
