The Spitfire XII, RAF's first Griffon-engined Spitfire, entered service in 1943. It was uniquely designed as a low-altitude interceptor, featuring a longer nose and cut-down rear fuselage, making it the fastest Spitfire variant at low altitudes during WW2.

Description
The Spitfire XII was the RAFs first Griffon engined Spitfire to see operational service with No. 41 and No. 91 Squadrons during 1943. Visually, the Mk. XII's Griffon engine made it unique amongst its contemporaries due to the longer nose, cut down rear fuselage and later on, the addition of a larger 'Spitfire' tail to aid stability. Specifically developed as a low altitude interceptor to combat low flying Focke-Wulf FW 190 fighter bombers, the XII was, at low altitude, the fastest variant of the Spitfire to see service during WW2.
