MAKE: Vickers - Supermarine Spitfire Mk 1a. ROLE: Single-seat fighter. POWERED BY: One 1,030 h.p. Rolls-Royce Merlin III 12-cylinder engine. PERFORMANCE: Maximum speed 365 m.p.h at 18,600ft, service ceiling 35,500ft, rate of climb 2,175ft/min. DIMENSIONS: Wing span 36 ft 10 in, length 29 ft 11 in, height 11 ft 5½ in. ARMAMENT: Eight .303 in Browning machine guns in wings. REMARKS: Designed by R. J. Mitchell, the prototype Spitfire made its first flight on 5th March, 1936, and entered RAF service in July 1938. At the outbreak of war on 3rd September 1939, nine squadrons were operational on Spitfire 1s and by the time the Battle of Britain began in July 1940, there were 19. When production ceased after the war, over 20,000 Spitfires of all types had been built.
