Description
The Spitfire Mk.V, developed as a stopgap between the Mk.II and the planned Mk.III, became the RAF's main fighter during much of WWII. Based on the Mk.III airframe but powered by the Merlin 45 engine, it entered service as the Mk.VA (eight machine guns) and Mk.VB (two cannons, four machine guns). Later, the Mk.VC introduced a universal wing allowing various armament fits, wingtip styles, and bomb racks. It saw action across Europe, Malta, North Africa, Italy, Yugoslavia, and Asia. Despite newer models entering service, the Mk.V remained in frontline use through 1944 and beyond. Over 6,500 Mk.Vs were built, making it the most produced Spitfire variant.
