Description
The Supermarine Spitfire Mk V was one of the most widely produced versions of the famous Supermarine Spitfire. After the Battle of Britain, it became clear that earlier Mk I and Mk II versions needed improved performance. The Mk V used the more powerful Merlin 45 engine and a modified airframe. Several variants were produced, including the Mk VA, Mk VB, and the strengthened-wing Mk VC, which allowed different armament combinations and even bombs for fighter-bomber missions. Introduced in 1941, the Mk V served across Europe, Malta, North Africa, and the Mediterranean. Over 6,500 were built. It had a top speed of about 574 km/h and a ceiling of 10,820 m.
