Description

The aircraft of progressive aerodynamic shape, designed according to the specification F37/34 of the British Air Ministry, denominated Spitfire, effected its maiden flight on March 5, 1936. It became the most famous aircraft of the RAF and symbol of victory in the Battle of Britain in W.W. 2. Spitfire Mk IX stands on end of the varied row of Spitfires driven by Rolls-Royce Merlin engines. It arised by the installation of the new high-altitude Merlin 61 engine with a new compressor in the airframe of Spitfire Mk V. It was produced in series since March 1942. Besides the classical fighters variant of F-fighter for fighting in low and medium altitudes (LF Low-Altitude Fighter) and in high altitudes (HF High-Altitude Fighter). They differed by the applied Merlin engine and sometimes by the form of the wings ends. The armaments of the Spitfires were in the wings. Wing type C (so-called universal wing) meant mostly carried two 20 mm British Hispano cannons and four 0.303-in Browning machine guns, it could however carry also four cannons or eight machine guns. The newer E type carried two high calibre Browning 0.5-in machine guns and two 20-mm cannons. In contrast to the C wing it could carry also two bomb racks for 250-lb bombs. There were produced over 5000 machines, which served on nearly all fronts of W.W.2 and even after its end. Technical data: span 11.23 m (9.93 m LF), length 9.47 or 9.54 m (according to the applied rudder), height 3.84 m. Max. speed according to version 646-665 km/h in 6400-8700m maximum ceiling 13900-14800 m, range 650-690 km with additional tank below the fuselage up to 1580 km.
