Description
The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I is widely regarded as one of the most elegant and effective single-seat fighters of WWII. Designed by Reginald J. Mitchell, it first flew on 5 March 1936. Featuring an all-metal, low-wing monoplane design, it was powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 engine producing over 1,000 hp, allowing a top speed of 582 km/h. Its iconic elliptical wings reduced drag and housed eight 7.7mm machine guns. Early models had two-blade wooden propellers, later upgraded to three-blade metal versions. With retractable landing gear and asymmetrical radiator/oil cooler placement, the Spitfire played a key role in the Battle of Britain, becoming a symbol of British resilience.
