Description
The most famous fighter, Super Spitfire, flight through the whole WWII from 1939. More than 20 types, built in large series or small production, they were different by its design. Some changes were inside and in the construction of the cockpit body, but the distinctive visibility differences came with changes of wing configuration, engine, propeller or armament. Basic type with the Merlin engine mostly carries three-blade prop. Next change with later Spitfire types, Mk. XXI and later Spitfires, Extra wider more powerful Griffon engine needed extra larger five-blade propeller. With the K-2 prototype, they reached the highest performance in most areas, though still not reaching jet combat speeds. They mostly perform in 1943-45, although further types X, XIV, 18, 22, 23, 24, further types continued to serve until 1954 or later.
The engine also was developed from Griffon 61 and last version V. One of the wide production. These changes improved speed up to 710 km/h, which became a key factor in the Spitfire M.21. These were much Clipped tips for low-level work. All further examples were fitted with 4 x 20 mm cannons. During 1944 they reached 4,000 rpm. X.2, which served on operational strength.
