MAKE: Vickers-Supermarine Spitfire IX. ROLE: Single-seat fighter. POWERED BY: One 1,515 h.p. Rolls-Royce Merlin 61 or 1,710 h.p. Merlin 63 or 63A. PERFORMANCE: Maximum speed 408 m.p.h at 25,000ft; service ceiling 42,500ft; range 980 miles with 175 gal. DIMENSIONS: Wing span 36ft 10in, length 30ft, height 12ft 7in. ARMAMENT: Two 20 mm cannon plus four .303 machine guns. REMARKS: Designed by R. J. Mitchell, the Spitfire in prototype form first flew on March 5, 1936. Early versions included the Mk. I, Ia, II and V. Over 5,660 Mk IXs built serving on all fronts during the Second World War. Other variants of the IX were the L.F. and H.F., low and high altitude versions respectively and the IXE with modified armament.
