Description

In 1967, Sukhoi began developing the Su-25, a heavily armored ground-attack aircraft, without an official order. After successful state trials, production was approved in 1978 at Factory 31 in Tbilisi, Georgia. Between 1978 and 1989, 582 single-seat Su-25s were built, excluding export versions like the Su-25K. The Su-25T introduced significant upgrades, including the Vikhr laser-guided missile system and Shkval targeting suite. The export-oriented Su-25TM (Su-39K) featured new R-195 engines, modern avionics, and a redesigned cockpit. Trainer and dual-seat variants included the Su-25UB, Su-25UBK (export), and the carrier-capable Su-25UTG/UTK. In 2007, only eight aircraft were converted to the planned Su-25BM due to budget issues. The Su-25SM modernization added upgraded avionics, precision weapons capability, and extended service life. By the early 1990s, about 1,000 Su-25s of all variants had been produced, becoming a mainstay in Russian and export air forces.
