Description
The prototype Supermarine Spitfire (K5054) first flew on March 5, 1936, leading to a massive initial RAF production order. Manufacturing faced early delays due to factory tooling and subcontracting challenges, but the first production Mk I (K9787) took flight in May 1938 and entered service with No. 19 Squadron at Duxford.
Early Spitfires were powered by Rolls-Royce Merlin II and III engines, initially paired with two-bladed wooden propellers before upgrading to three-bladed de Havilland and Rotol constant-speed units. Critical wartime fixes, including Beatrice Shilling's carburetor modification to prevent engine cutouts during negative-G dives, ensured the aircraft were battle-ready for the Battle of Britain in 1940.
