Description
The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.II was an improved version of the famous Spitfire Mk.I, developed during the Battle of Britain to enhance performance and reliability. While retaining the iconic elliptical-wing airframe, the Mk.II introduced the more powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin XII engine, capable of using 100-octane fuel for increased power output. Production began in 1940, with many early aircraft assembled at the new Castle Bromwich factory, established to boost fighter production during wartime. The first Mk.II entered RAF service in mid-1940, and squadrons quickly adopted the type as a frontline fighter. Faster and more capable than its predecessor, the Spitfire Mk.II played an important role in defending Britain against Luftwaffe attacks and became a key step in the continuous evolution of the legendary Spitfire family.
