Description
By 1940, large-scale production of the Spitfire Mk.I and Mk.II was refined enough to meet RAF demands and replace combat losses. However, the arrival of the German Bf 109F in late 1940 gave the Luftwaffe a performance edge. To counter this, the RAF introduced the Spitfire Mk.V, powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin 45 engine producing about 1,320 hp. Production began in 1941 and quickly expanded. Supermarine built 1,352 Mk.V aircraft: 94 Mk.Va, 780 Mk.Vb, and 478 Mk.Vc. Castle Bromwich Aircraft Factory produced over 3,000 more. During its 2½-year production run, the Mk.V received upgrades including thicker armor, a larger circular oil cooler, and improved armament—typically two 20 mm Hispano cannons and four .303 machine guns. Later versions also had a redesigned canopy with internal armored glass.
