Description
The Spitfire Mk.XII was a low-level interceptor designed to counter Fw 190 fighter-bomber raids. Powered by the Griffon engine, it offered superior low-altitude performance compared to earlier Merlin-powered variants. A four-bladed propeller was fitted to handle the increased power, and the enlarged engine cowling housed a higher-capacity oil tank. The Mk.XII featured low-back fuselages and retained the older-style canopy from late Mk.Vs. Most had extended wingtips. Operational with Nos. 41, 91, and 322 (Dutch) Squadrons, the Mk.XII proved a rugged and effective low-level fighter during its service.
