Description
The Supermarine Spitfire Mk VIII was a high-performance British fighter aircraft developed during World War II. It featured a two-stage, two-speed Rolls-Royce Merlin 63 engine producing 1,710 hp, enabling speeds up to 408 mph (656 km/h) at 25,000 ft (7,620 m) and a service ceiling of 43,000 ft (13,120 m). The Mk VIII had a wingspan of 36 ft 10 in (11.23 m) and a length of 31 ft 3½ in (9.54 m), with a maximum takeoff weight of 7,800 lb (3,538 kg). Armament included two 20 mm Hispano Mk II cannons and four .303 Browning machine guns. Introduced in November 1942, the Mk VIII was optimized for high-altitude combat and was widely used by the RAF and Commonwealth forces. It played a significant role in various theaters, including the Mediterranean and Pacific fronts.
