Description

In September 1941, the Focke-Wulf Fw 190A appeared over Western Europe, proving far superior to British fighters, especially the Spitfire Mk.V. RAF losses rose sharply, leading to the suspension of most daytime operations by November 1941. Attempts to resume in March 1942 failed due to continued high losses. The Fw 190A’s dominance forced a British response, initially with the Spitfire Mk.VIII. However, its complex redesign delayed production. In June 1942, a German pilot mistakenly landed an intact Fw 190 in Britain, allowing direct comparison with the Spitfire Mk.V. Trials confirmed the RAF’s disadvantage. Only the future Spitfire Mk.VII and VIII, powered by the advanced Merlin 61 engine, showed promise, but were not yet ready. The Mk.VIII finally entered service in July 1943. With extended range, it served in the Mediterranean, flown by both RAF and USAAF pilots, and later in India, Burma, and the Pacific with the RAAF against Japanese forces.
