Description

One of the most distinguished British Aces of WWII on Spitfire Mk.VII fighters was Wing Commander P.M. Brothers. During 1940 - 1944 he was confirmed with 16 enemy aircraft destroyed, one probably destroyed and three damaged. Peter Melem Brothers began a service in No 32 Squadron in October, 1936, and in 1938 became a commander of a flight. The first air victory he was gained on May 18, 1940, having shot down a Bf 109 on a Hurricane fighter nearby to Cambrai. During Battle of Britain he was destroyed eight aircraft, including 5 Bf 109E. In June, 1941 P.M. Brothers was headed No 457 Australian Squadron, and then No 602, flying on Spitfire airplanes. In October, 1942 he became commander of Tangmere Wing. During Allied invasion in Normandy P.M. Brothers was headed Culmhead Wing, including No 131 and No 616 Squadrons. In the inventory of this Wing consisted of high-altitude fighters Spitfire Mk. VII. They executed high-altitude cover of bomber groups. His last, 16th victory P.M. Brothers was recorded on the battle score on August 7, 1944, having shot down FW 190. After war Peter Brothers was promoted to Air Commodore and was discharged in 1973. P.M. Brothers was awarded with a DFC & Bar and DSO.
