Description
By late 1940, it became very obvious to the Air Ministry that the performance of the Spitfire Mark I/II was lagging behind their German contemporaries. In an effort to maintain constant production, Mark I/II airframes were reconfigured with stronger engine bearers to accomodate more powerful Merlin engines; this version became the Mark V. The Mark Va was armed with eight 7.7mm machine guns, the Vb carried two 20mm cannon and four 7.7mm machine guns. The Vc model had a strengthened wing that was able to accommodate numerous armament installations. Tropicalized versions intended for use in the Mediterranean theatre carried the distinctive and characteristic Vokes air filter fairing under the cowl. The Spitfire Mk. V was the most-produced variant, with production running well over 6500 airframes. American pilots also flew the Spitfire Mk. Vc for about two years in the Mediterranean. Although it was praised for its maneuverability, the Spitfire's relative lack of range eventually could not be tolerated, and American forces re-equipped with P-51B Mustangs when they became available in 1943.
