Description
The Supermarine Spitfire became one of the most recognizable fighters in aviation history, serving the RAF for about 13 years—from the end of the biplane era to the early jet age. Designed by Reginald J. Mitchell, it evolved from racing aircraft like the Supermarine S.6B. After the unsuccessful Type 224, Mitchell developed the Type 300 powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. It first flew on March 5, 1936, and entered RAF service with No. 19 Squadron in 1938. Continuous improvements led to the Spitfire Mk.V, powered by the Merlin 45 engine. Produced from 1941, it became the most numerous variant, with over 6,400 built. The Mk.Vc featured a strengthened wing capable of carrying four 20 mm cannons and improved cooling with a larger circular oil cooler.
