Description
The Supermarine Spitfire was one of the most iconic fighter aircraft of World War II, serving throughout the conflict and earning lasting fame for its performance during the Battle of Britain. Designed by R.J. Mitchell for the Royal Air Force, it originated from a requirement for a modern high-performance interceptor and drew on advanced aerodynamic research from Schneider Trophy seaplanes. The result was a sleek low-wing monoplane with an all-metal structure, retractable landing gear, and excellent aerodynamic efficiency. The prototype K5054 first flew in March 1936, leading to a production order of 310 aircraft shortly after.
Entering service alongside the Hawker Hurricane, the Spitfire became a key defender of British airspace in 1940. Its performance continued to improve through successive variants, with the Mk.V becoming one of the most widely used wartime versions. Powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, the Mk.V offered strong speed, climb rate, and combat flexibility.
Tropical and desert-equipped variants served in North Africa and the Mediterranean, fitted with Vokes air filters to protect the engine from sand and harsh conditions. Armed typically with two 20 mm Hispano cannons and four .303 machine guns, the Spitfire Mk.V remained a highly effective frontline fighter across multiple theaters of war.
