The Supermarine Spitfire Mk Vb was one of the most important early-war versions of the legendary British fighter. Entering service in 1941, it was powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin 45 engine, which gave improved performance at low and medium altitudes. The Mk Vb introduced the “B” wing, armed with two 20 mm Hispano cannons and four .303 machine guns, significantly increasing its firepower. For a time it was the RAF’s main frontline fighter and proved highly effective in Europe, North Africa, and the Mediterranean. However, the arrival of the German Fw 190 exposed its limitations, leading to the rapid development of later Spitfire variants.
