Description
Designed by R.J. Mitchell in the mid-1930s, this Supermarine Type 300 Mk.1 prototype first flew on March 5, 1936. The Spitfire was refined and developed into numerous variants through World War II. In early 1941, the Spitfire Mk.V was introduced with the Merlin 45 engine. With its improved speed and maneuverability, the Mk.V became the main RAF fighter during 1941-42. Within this Mk.V series, the Mk.Vb armed with two 20mm cannons and four .303 machine guns became the most widely produced version. Many Mk.Vb's also had their wingtips clipped to improve low-altitude performance. The Spitfire remained in service throughout WWII, making it one of the most famous fighters in history.
