Description
When the Focke-Wulf 190 entered service in August 1941, the RAF saw itself clearly outclassed by German Luftwaffe as the Spitfire Mk.V currently in service was no match in it's opponent. Just prior to the Spitfire about to enter service, the Mk-VIII wasn't ready yet and it would take a while to reach the necessary production levels anyways. As a interim measure Supermarine had the idea of matching the Mk-Vc airframe with the new 'Rolls-Royce' Merlin series 60 engine much more powerful than its previous versions, particularly above 30,000 feet. Born in hast and it would become one of the finest of all Spitfire versions. Unexpectedly, the Spitfire Mk IX has an extraordinary manoeuvrability, the Mk IX saw continuous service with various airforces world-wide till and well after WWII and always taking good care of himself and it's pilots. A pure fighter aircraft of sub-versions, the Mk IX was the second most produced variant lost only to Mk V versions. From a pure interceptor and escort fighter the Spitfire Mk IX also grew into a most potent fighter-bomber mainly in Mk IXe version. Armed with two 20mm canon and up to 1,000lb of bombs during and after the Normandy battle, Spitfires flew thousands of bombing sorties against axis forces in the continent mainland. Whatever it's version, the Spitfire is and will always be one of aviation true classics.
