Description
The Supermarine Spitfire is one of the most iconic fighters of all time, serving for an impressive 13 years. Entering service at the end of the biplane era, it remained on the frontlines into the jet age. In the early 1930s, the RAF sought a replacement for its outdated Hawker Fury biplanes. Racing floatplanes, like Reginald J. Mitchell’s Supermarine S.6B, demonstrated much higher speeds, influencing the Air Ministry to issue Specification F.7/30 in 1931. Though it called for 250 mph fighters, most submissions were still biplanes. Mitchell's monoplane Supermarine 224 was innovative but underwhelming, and the RAF selected the Gloster Gladiator instead.
