Description
The British Spitfire, probably the best known of fighting of World War II, was one of the most beautiful aircraft of all time. The Spitfire Mk.IX appeared in July 1942 as a development of the Mk.V, in response to the appearance of the new German FW 190A fighter. The Spitfire Mk.IX armament was reliable in service and relatively easy to maintain. Its excellent flight characteristics and was better armed and armored than previous marks. It was also extremely versatile. The Spitfire Mk.IX was used in many different roles - universal (F), low-altitude fighter-bomber (LF), medium-altitude fighter-bomber (HF) and fighter-reconnaissance (FR). The Spitfire Mk.IX was in service with the RAF, RAAF, RNZAF, USAF, USSF, Fighting Poland, Free Czechoslovakia, Fighting France, Egypt, Israel and many other states besides. Many famous aces piloted Mk.IX Spitfires among them: J.E.Johnson (RCAF, Canada, 38 confirmed kills), Neville Duke (RCAF, Canada, 24), A.Slakski (RAF, Poland, 24), C.Gray (RNZAF, New Zeland, 27+2), S.Skalski (RAF, Poland, 24), G.Wade (RCAF, Canada, 21 to mention a few. Altogether, 5.710 Mk.IX were built between fall of 1942-1945.
