Description
The Spitfire is certainly the most famous and best known fighter of the Second World War. It became famous during the Battle of England when, together with the Hawker Hurricane, it faced the German raiders that were attacking England. The Spitfire Mk. IX was born as a temporary solution waiting for the Mk. VIII. The main differences were a new engine, initially the Merlin 61, then evolved into versions with ever-increasing power, and a new propeller with five wide blades to use all the power of the new engines. The wings were standard Type C wings, on which cannons or machine guns could be mounted. Many sub-versions were built, including tropicalized versions for use in the Mediterranean theater and in North Africa.
