The Spitfire Mk.Ia was a British fighter aircraft developed in the 1930s for the Royal Air Force. It was designed by R.J. Mitchell, based on his racing plane experience, and became an iconic fighter of World War II.

Description

By the early 1930s the RAF sought replacements for aging biplanes like the Hawker Fury. Racing monoplanes competing for the Schneider Trophy had proven much faster. R.J. Mitchell designer of the Supermarine S.6B helped set a world speed record of 407 mph or 655 km/h in 1931. Inspired by such achievements the British Air Ministry issued Specification F.7/30 calling for a modern fighter capable of 250 mph or 400 km/h. Ironically Mitchell’s response the Supermarine Type 224 was a disappointing biplane heavily strut-braced and underpowered and ended up being the slowest contender. Ultimately the Gloster Gladiator another biplane was selected as the RAF’s new fighter delaying the service entry of a true monoplane design. It would still take time before the RAF transitioned to high-speed monoplanes like the iconic Spitfire another Mitchell design just a few years later.
