Description
The Spitfire LF Mk.IXc was a mid-war variant of the iconic British fighter, introduced in 1942 to counter the German Fw 190. It featured the powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin 66 engine, optimized for low to medium altitudes. The "LF" stood for "Low Flight," and the "c" wing configuration allowed a mix of armament—typically two 20mm Hispano cannons and four .303 machine guns. The Mk.IXc combined excellent speed, climb rate, and maneuverability, making it a favorite among RAF pilots. It played a crucial role in regaining air superiority over Europe and served in multiple theatres, including the Western Front and the Mediterranean.
