Description
The Supermarine Spitfire LF.IXE was a low-altitude optimized variant of the famous British fighter and saw limited but notable service with the Soviet Air Force during the final stages of World War II. Powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin 66 engine, it offered excellent performance at low and medium altitudes, making it well suited for frontline combat. The “E” wing configuration typically carried two 20 mm Hispano cannon and two .50 caliber machine guns, providing effective firepower. Supplied to the USSR under the Lend-Lease program, Soviet Spitfire LF.IXEs were primarily used for air defense and escort duties rather than frontline dogfighting. Although Soviet pilots preferred rugged domestic types like the Yak and La series, the Spitfire was respected for its handling, climb rate, and combat capability.
