Description
The Supermarine Spitfire LF (Low Flight) variant was designed for superior low- to medium-altitude performance. Powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin 66 engine with a two-stage supercharger delivering 1,705 hp, it could reach speeds of about 404 mph (650 km/h) at 21,000 ft (6,400 m). The LF Spitfires, such as the Mk IX LF and Mk XVI LF, featured clipped wings for improved roll rate and maneuverability at low levels. Armament included two 20 mm Hispano cannons and four .303 or two .50 caliber Browning machine guns. Entering service in 1943, LF Spitfires excelled in ground attack, escort, and air superiority missions over Europe and the Mediterranean.
