Description

One of the most distinguished Soviet Aces of WW II on Spitfire fighters was twice Hero of the Soviet Union Alexandr Karpov. During Great Patriotic War Guard Major A.Karpov made 519 sorties, participated in 130 air combats, shot down 30 enemy aircraft personally and 7 - in group, became the most successful pilot of the Air Defense. Alexandr Terentyevich Karpov was born on October 14, 1917 in the village Filenevo near Kaluga. He graduated as a pilot from the Kachinsky military pilots school in 1940 he finished pilots military aviation school in Moscow. His first combat flights flew at Yak-1 fighters under Moscow in the end of July 1941 as a part of 27th Air Defense Fighter Regiment. In September 27 regiment was transferred to Leningrad region. Together with his leader Belyaev I.Belyaev, A.Karpov was shot down more than 50 enemy airplanes. June 30, 1944 A.Karpov destroyed a 1000th German airplane from defenders aircraft over Leningrad at Yak fighters. In summer of 1944 he flew Spitfire LF.IX.E fighter. On reconnaissance aircraft on a high altitude the Guard Major A.Karpov has lost consciousness because of the refusal of the oxygen system and perished. Captain A.Karpov was honoured by being named a Hero of the Soviet Union on September 28, 1943. Twice Hero of the Soviet Union captain of the guard A.Karpov became August 22, 1944.
