Description

In September 1941, the Fw 190A appeared over Western Europe, outperforming RAF fighters, including the Spitfire Mk.V. The RAF suffered heavy losses and even ceased most daytime operations. In 1942, a captured Fw 190 confirmed its superiority, prompting an urgent British response. The advanced Spitfire Mk.VIII was still in development, so engineers quickly paired the powerful Merlin 61 engine with the Mk.Vc airframe. This led to the birth of the Spitfire Mk.IX. First flown in early 1942, it entered service in July and proved highly effective. With a top speed of 409 mph and a climb rate of 4,000 ft/min, it restored RAF competitiveness. Three main variants followed: the F.IX with Merlin 61, LF.IX with Merlin 66 for low altitudes, and HF.IX with Merlin 70 for high-altitude operations. Armed with a mix of 20 mm cannon and .303 machine guns, it later gained the stronger ‘E’ wing and bomb racks. Over 5,600 Mk.IXs were built. They served until the war’s end and beyond with air forces like Czechoslovakia, Norway, and Israel.
