Description
The Soviet MiG-3 early version was a high-altitude interceptor developed in 1940 by the Mikoyan-Gurevich design bureau as a successor to the MiG-1. It featured a streamlined all-metal monoplane design, powered by the AM-35A engine optimized for high-altitude performance, and was armed with one 12.7 mm UBK machine gun and two 7.62 mm ShKAS guns. While its speed and climb rate were excellent at altitude, it proved less effective at lower levels, where most Eastern Front combat occurred. Early MiG-3s were deployed in 1941 during the initial stages of the German invasion, performing air defense and interception missions, but suffered heavy losses due to unsuitable deployment at low altitude and the overwhelming Luftwaffe presence.
