Description
The Seversky J9 was the Swedish Air Force designation for the Seversky P 35 fighter, ordered in 1939 as part of Sweden’s urgent effort to modernize its air defenses. The aircraft was an all metal low wing monoplane with retractable landing gear, enclosed cockpit, and a radial engine, representing a modern design by late 1930s standards. Due to the outbreak of World War II and a U.S. export embargo, delivery was delayed, and the aircraft reached Sweden in 1940 already obsolete compared to contemporary European fighters. Armed with machine guns only and lacking armor and self sealing fuel tanks, the J9 was unsuitable for frontline combat. It was therefore mainly used for training, transition flying, and air defense familiarization, serving reliably but without significant operational impact.
