Description
At the end of 1939, the Admiralty requested a naval version of the Spitfire with folding wings. The Supermarine Type 338 project, powered by a Griffon engine, was canceled as Spitfire Mk.Is were urgently needed. Naval pilots began receiving Seafires in 1942, though these early models had fixed wings, limiting carrier operations. In spring 1942, GAL and Supermarine began developing a folding wing mechanism, first tested on Seafire Mk.II MA970, which flew on November 9, 1943. Approved for production, the folding-wing Seafire Mk.III was built by Westland and Cunliffe-Owen. Early F Mk.III models were followed by LF Mk.III for low-altitude performance, and a few FR Mk.III with cameras. Deployed from late 1943, Seafire Mk.IIIs saw action in Norway, the Mediterranean, and the Pacific. Postwar users included France and Ireland.
