Description
The Savoia-Marchetti S.M.79-II Sparviero was an Italian three-engine medium bomber and torpedo bomber of World War II, developed from the original S.M.79 design. Famous for its distinctive “humpbacked” fuselage, it combined speed, range, and payload capacity, making it effective for maritime strike missions. Powered by three radial engines, the S.M.79-II could carry bombs or torpedoes and was equipped with defensive machine guns in dorsal, ventral, and lateral positions. It saw extensive service in the Mediterranean and North African theaters, attacking shipping, performing reconnaissance, and supporting ground operations. Despite heavy losses later in the war, the Sparviero earned a reputation as a fast and reliable bomber, becoming one of Italy’s most recognized wartime aircraft.
