Description
The SAAB AJ 37 Viggen was a revolutionary Swedish multirole aircraft designed with a canard-delta wing layout and powered by the Volvo RM8 engine, a license-built JT8D with afterburner and thrust reverser. Its design enabled short takeoffs and landings on rough airstrips. First flown in 1967, it became the backbone of the Swedish Air Force. The initial AJ 37 strike version was followed by the SK 37 trainer, SF 37 reconnaissance, and SH 37 anti-ship variant. Later, the JA 37 fighter introduced upgraded avionics and engine. Earlier models were modernized into AJS variants. Viggens served until 2007 but were never exported due to political reasons, despite foreign interest. It was the first fighter to use integrated circuit-based computers.
