Description
The SAAB AJ 37 Viggen was a groundbreaking Swedish multirole aircraft, featuring a unique canard-delta wing layout and advanced avionics. First flown in 1967, it was powered by a Volvo RM8 turbofan, a license-built Pratt & Whitney JT8D with afterburner and thrust reverser, enabling short takeoffs from rough airstrips. The foldable tailfin aided storage and concealment. Viggen was the first combat aircraft with a computer using integrated circuits. The AJ 37 strike version was followed by SK 37 trainers, SF 37 reconnaissance, and SH 37 anti-ship variants. The JA 37 introduced improved avionics and a stronger engine. Modernized versions were designated AJS, AJSF, and AJSH 37. Some SK 37s became EW trainers. Retired in 2007, the Viggen was never exported, despite interest from India, Japan, and others.
