Description

The SAAB 37 Viggen was a groundbreaking Swedish multirole aircraft, first flown in 1967. Designed with a unique canard-delta wing and powered by the Volvo RM8 engine (a modified JT8D with afterburner and thrust reverser), it could operate from short runways and highways. Its foldable tail improved storage and mobility. The Viggen featured advanced avionics, being the first fighter with an integrated circuit-based computer. The initial AJ 37 strike version was followed by variants like the SK 37 trainer, SF 37 reconnaissance, SH 37 anti-ship, and the advanced JA 37 interceptor with improved avionics and engine. Later, upgraded versions became the AJS series. Though never exported, the Viggen served Sweden until 2007, showcasing exceptional versatility and innovation.
