Description
The Ryan XF2R-1 Dark Shark was a prototype U.S. Navy fighter developed from the FR-1 Fireball, featuring both turboprop and turbojet engines. First flown in November 1946, it had a new nose with a 1,700 shp General Electric TG-100 turboprop driving a four-bladed propeller, plus a 1,600 lbf J-31 turbojet in the aft fuselage. Unlike the FR-1, it lacked folding wings and carrier gear, making it land-based only. It retained tricycle landing gear and FR-1 layout. Though never armed, it was likely capable of carrying four .50 cal machine guns, two 1,000 lb bombs, and four 5-inch rockets.
