Description
The Royal Navy Sea Harrier FRS1 (Fighter/Reconnaissance/Strike) entered service in April 1980. Its primary role was to protect the Royal Navy's fleet from Soviet long-range reconnaissance and bomber aircraft. The Sea Harrier FRS1 was basically a navalised version of the RAF Harrier GR3, but incorporated major modifications for maritime use. The most notable change was the raised cockpit position which gave the pilot a better view for carrier deck landings. A new radar system was also fitted to enable the Sea Harrier to find both air and sea targets. During the 1982 Falklands conflict, Sea Harriers played a major role in Britain's victory. Their agility and sophisticated weapons systems enabled them to overcome Argentina's Mirage fighters, which although faster, were operating at maximum range. Sea Harriers destroyed 20 enemy aircraft without loss in air-to-air combat.
