Description
The Roland C.IIa Walfisch was a German two-seat reconnaissance and light bomber aircraft used during World War I. Designed by Luft-Fahrzeug-Gesellschaft, it first flew in 1915 and entered service in 1916. Its most distinctive feature was the streamlined, fully enclosed plywood fuselage, which gave it the nickname “Whale” and provided excellent aerodynamic performance for its time. Powered by a Mercedes D.III engine, the C.IIa was fast, agile, and difficult for enemy fighters to intercept. It carried a fixed forward-firing machine gun for the pilot and a flexible gun for the observer. Although praised for speed and handling, limited cockpit visibility and structural complexity restricted widespread use, and it was soon replaced by more conventional designs.
