Description
The Republic P-47 originated in 1940, influenced by the war in Europe, which revealed the need for fighters with powerful engines, heavy armament, long range, and strong climbing ability. To meet these needs, Alexander Kartveli designed the XP-47B, powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp 18-cylinder radial engine, driving a 3.7 m (12 ft) four-bladed propeller. The wings carried eight .50 caliber (12.7 mm) Browning machine guns and could be equipped with bombs or rockets.
The P-47N was developed as a long-range escort for B-29 Superfortress bombers in the Pacific. It featured a more powerful R-2800-57(C) engine and squared-off wingtips that extended the wingspan from 12.43 m to 13.41 m. These modifications increased fuel capacity to 4,536 liters, including two large drop tanks, enabling missions over 3,200 km.
